8/27/2023 0 Comments Top ten rush songs![]() ![]() Alex’s guitar is punk-like in its simplistic riffing – this is one of the most aggressive songs Rush has written up to this point in their career. ![]() The first track, “Force Ten”, opens with a bone-rattling jackhammer and sampled choir, quickly followed by a straight-ahead drumbeat while the bassline leaps and bounds. Inside the booklet, there was a spread that was more like what Rush fans expected: a man juggled three flaming balls (hold your fire, indeed), the building behind him vaguely resembled the façade in the Moving Pictures cover, in one of the windows you could make out the three vintage television sets from Power Windows, on the sidewalk stood the red fire hydrant from Signals, and the Chinese restaurant’s clock read 21:12 in military time (it turns out the restaurant’s sign reads Tai Shan, as well). Peter Collins, who produced Power Windows, was back in the saddle, which boded well. I couldn’t wait to hear the music. The obvious conclusion was that Alex, Geddy, and Neil were now reduced to the simplest, most perfect solid in geometry – polished and ready to bounce off of each other like billiard balls. Visually, at least, Hold Your Fire was sleek and minimalist. This was something unprecedented in Rush album cover art – instead of a meticulously detailed Hugh Syme painting containing visual puns, there were just three red spheres suspended over a red background. The day before the official release date, I unpacked the box in which our store’s copies were packed, and gazed in admiration at the cover: Which is my long-winded way of setting the stage for when I first encountered Hold Your Fire. Power Windows was the first and only album of which I owned the cassette, the Lp, and the CD. Rush was back! I played the cassette in my car constantly, and when the compact disc came out, I immediately got a copy. But when he put it on the store’s sound system, and those glorious “Big Money” power chords poured out of the speakers, I was hooked. I was surprised, to say the least, because Rush was not cool, like a 4AD band automatically was. One day, our import buyer (who was the hippest employee in the store) was very excited, because it was the release date for Rush’s new album, Power Windows. In the mid-‘80s, I worked in record store, and we prided ourselves on listening to the cutting edge of everything new wave and postpunk: Cocteau Twins, The The, Simple Minds, The Smiths, R.E.M., The Cure, Talk Talk, etc. (In case you’re inclined to quit reading, in disgust at my ignorance of the greatness of Grace Under Pressure, I did eventually get it!) So I skipped Grace Under Pressure, convinced that Rush’s best days were behind them in the Permanent Waves/ Moving Pictures era. However, to my ears Signals was a letdown – the pervasive whoosh of synthesizers seemed to overwhelm Alex’s guitars, and the melodies weren’t as memorable as those in Moving Pictures. Moving Pictures upped the ante even more, and Rush were becoming one of my all-time favorite bands. ![]() That album remained in permanent rotation on my dorm room’s turntable for months, and I still listen to it often. The next album I acquired was Permanent Waves, because “Spirit of Radio” was all over the radio, and Geddy’s voice had mellowed a bit. Geddy’s vocals turned me off initially, but Neil’s lyrics were very intriguing. The first Rush album I bought was A Farewell To Kings – it was a cutout*, and I had heard they were a pretty good progressive rock trio. ![]()

You can place it past that groove, but your thumb slides more if you don’t hook it into that depression. The second, more likely, possibility is the thumb placement – it naturally falls into just one location and I prefer my thumb a bit closer to the front than this allows. If that was the problem, it wasn’t as obvious as it was with the Harperton and I suspect it was within an acceptable enough range that I would probably get used to it. The first is that the radius of curvature was slightly tight and thus it was more awkward. But I felt like I had a little less control with them than I would prefer with something that sharp. The Seki Edge SS-107 is quite sharp and well constructed. ![]() (The Seki SS-106 is Wirecutter’s runner-up pick, but I ordered the toenail version.) I initially ordered just the Seki Edge SS-107 and the Harperton Nail Clipper set. I could find almost no information on this particular point for any reviews of clippers on this point. Thus I prefer a larger radius of curvature than even most toenail clippers have, which is one reason I was neurotically possessive of the pair I had to replace. (I had been using the same pair of toenail clippers on both my toes and my fingers for years, though.) ![]() Almost any clipper can handle the rest of my nails. (Though I have no idea how mine compares to someone with, say, diabetes.) So I personally need a clipper that can handle the wide width and thickness of my big toes. (Probably all those clippers we found were the leavings from the last time I had to buy clippers.) This is compounded by the fact that my big toe also seems to get rather thick. It is wide enough that it is really hard to clip my big toe’s nail without getting a heart-shaped V somewhere along the middle with most clippers. My stress test for clippers is my big toe. That said… does anyone actually use the files on their clipper? It is very rough and is less than an inch long – on the big clippers. The Harperton’s file is under the lever so you have to open it up and hold it quite awkwardly at the very end of the lever to keep it stable. This is also a softer file than many clippers have, and is thus less likely to leave microfissures in your nail. (Yeah, well, that’s the problem with subjective measures.)īest file: The placement (it is the groove along the top of the lever) and length (almost 1 ¾ inch) of the Green Bell makes this file easier to use. So close that another member of my household reversed the two in that ranking. The Seki and Green Bell are very close, though. Largest Radius of Curvature: A visual inspection (i.e, this is not a scientifically calibrated measurement, folks) has the radius, from smallest to largest: Harperton, Seki, then Green Bell. Unless you have weak hands, it isn’t a deal breaker. That said, the Harperton was sufficient for the job. Sharpest: The Green Bell G-1205 and Seki SS-107 subjectively felt equally sharp to me. The greater control given by the ergonomic design of the Green Bell made the difference here.īest for weak hands: Both the Seki and Green Bell require much less pressure than any other clipper I’ve ever used. The Green Bell and Seki SS-107 open about the same height as each other and both have a slightly bigger “mouth” than the Harperton. The Seki SS-107 was close, but the greater control given by the ergonomic design of the Green Bell made the difference here.īest for thick nails: Green Bell G-1205. I’ll be keeping this set for the smaller folks in the household but I probably won’t use it much myself.īest for wide nails: Green Bell G-1205. That said, I have no problem using a wider radius on my pinky finger my limiting factor is always the widest nails, not the narrowest. The Harperton will be good enough for most people.īest for small hands or children: Harperton gives you two sizes to choose from and they both have a smaller radius of curvature than the other two. Even though it is quite large, the ergonomic construction makes it useful for almost any hand size.īest value-for-money: You get two clippers in the Harperton set for slightly more than the Seki and slightly less than the Green Bell. It was as well constructed and as sharp as any other offering, but I also felt I had the most control with it. The Harperton Nail Clipper Set (this has both toe and finger nail clippers)īottom line: The Green Bell G-1205 was my favorite. I chose three that were either recommended or were closely related to those recommended by reputable review sites: We launched a clipper hunt around the house and found an appallingly large number of clippers – but I liked none of the ten or so pairs we discovered, none of which were the lost favorites. My favorite clippers, alas, fell into a black hole. ![]() Comparison between Harperton, Seki and Green Bell clippers ![]() ![]() ![]()

There’s a single display stretching from nearly the left A-pillar through the top of the center stack. Inside, Lordstown has adopted the screen-centric approach taken with virtually all new battery-electric vehicles. ![]() There’s a reasonably large frunk, or front trunk, under the hood, something that should appeal to buyers who don’t like leaving valuables inside the cabin. But the nose is the most distinctive detail on Endurance, with a broad panel replacing what would be a conventional grille, and slit-style lighting just below the hood. The automaker plucked its engineering team from Detroit and they brought with them some useful details, including steps built into the bumper to make it easy to reach into the bed.Ĭoming at the truck from the rear or sides you might not notice anything unusual. StylingĬlearly not as radical as Tesla’s long-delayed Cybertruck, the Lordstown Endurance boasts a fairly conventional pickup shape, with a four-door cab and a 67-inch cargo bed. It’s a midsize package riding atop a unique, skateboard-like platform and is powered by four wheel-hub motors. It took a while to line up an Endurance for a test drive, and I was limited to a long afternoon behind the wheel, putting it through its paces along my favorite route through Hell, Michigan and beyond. ![]() Lordstown officials claim the approach requires fewer moving parts which should translate into lower maintenance costs. What’s unusual about the truck is that it relies on four individual “hub” motors, meaning they’re mounted within Endurance’s wheels. It’s a full-size package riding atop a unique, skateboard-like platform. Plans have shifted, however, and the company is now focused on the commercial market, rather than aiming at retail customers. The company’s first offering, the Lordstown Endurance is finally rolling off the line at the now Foxconn-owned plant. It’s a bet I wish I had taken, though it’s still far from certain that Lordstown Motors will be a long-term survivor. Somewhere in Vegas the bookmakers were clearly giving long odds against the startup ever making it into production. It’s management team baldly inflated advance sales numbers and Lordstown was forced to sell its assembly plant - an old GM facility in, appropriately, Lordstown, Ohio to Taiwanese mega-manufacturer Foxconn. Where Lordstown winds up remains to be seen.Įarlier this year, it seemed like the Ohio-based EV wannabe was doomed to crash and burn. There are a handful of strong contenders, such as Lucid and Rivian, as well as a long list of failures. While not as eclectic looking as Tesla’s Cybertruck, the Lordstown Endurance offers a unique look.īut it’s only with the advent of the battery-electric vehicle that there’ve been any real success stories - primarily in the form of Tesla. ![]() 8/26/2023 0 Comments Qt creator 9![]() ![]() ![]() Meanwhile, the language evolution (EWG) and library evolution (LEWG) working groups are already working on new features targeting C++26.
